Our
Story
Hearts for animals Maui, founder Crystal Smith has led a life dedicated to helping homeless animals. Crystal has been called a "big heart with feet" creating the first no kill Cat Sanctuary years ago on Maui.
Our immediate goal is to raise enough funds to secure a permanent property on Maui for our rescues with the means and resources encompassing a nurturing environment conducive for more of our beloved animals.
Hearts For Animals Maui is currently caring for over 200 cats in several locations. With your donations we could greatly increase our ability to purchase a new refuge to house our many additional rescues. This would assist our organization in taking our furry friends off the streets, parking lots, and other unsafe spaces all while providing medical and Spay Neuter services in a local, friendly environment and providing them with a nurturing and healing home.

Our dedication is strong

Years of Devotion and Commitment.
Crystal Smith, founder of Hearts for Animals Maui began rescuing homeless animals on Maui right out of high school.
She was one of the only special souls going into the sugarcane fields, performing dog and cat rescue with special permits to enter years ago, these fields were set on fire for harvesting.
Crystal had also been driving the road to Hana multiple times per week. Her purpose was to bring food and water to the homeless cats. Crystal happened to be on a video project when she stopped at a park on Hana highway and saw a tame pregnant cat crying to her for help in a parking lot. She than recognized that across the street was a litter of wild kittens with their eyes infected. Crystal knew immediately she had to do something because nobody else was helping them and no one else in the area had the means to do so.
She scooped up the pregnant cat and returned the next morning to rescue the entire litter of sick, starving kittens, leaving food for the other homeless cats. She started rescuing these cats out of the parks and getting them spayed and neutered with her own money and soon realized these cats were not safe from being trapped and euthanized.
Crystal knew she had to speak up for these voiceless animals in order to save them. This is when she became Ms. Hawaii 1997 to represent the state in the Ms. Continental pageant, this was not a swimsuit type of pageant. This was for women who were recognized by their service and dedication to the Island. That’s the only reason she entered so that she could change the way Maui was trapping and killing cats.
By having this title, she was able to convince people in power to listen to a more humane approach, which is known as TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return)
Maui News wrote a story on Crystal on the Sunday paper, this helped to change the way people think by educating people in the importance for Spay Neuter and allowing the cats to live.
She was a huge part in implementing the feral cat program. We at HFAM don’t like to use this word because it’s so often misunderstood. Crystal and our Team like to refer to these homeless cats as simply that "homeless Cats". With our team, "Feral" simply means "without human contact". Many of these cats are touchable lap cats that are just scared out of fear from the many dangers that can be associated with being without a loving, nurturing, and safe environment.
Crystal Smith instituted the Maui Spay Neuter program which is now officially the Feral Cat Program. She implemented the Maui Spay Neuter program and started the very first No Kill Cat Sanctuary on Maui.

Our Mission
Build a Sanctuary
Hearts for Animals Maui is a compassionate cat rescue organization based in Maui. We focus on providing a safe haven for cats, promoting adoptions, and raising awareness about animal welfare. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure that every cat receives the love and care they deserve.

KAI
Kai, one of our many one eyed rescued cats was very ill! Kai had huge swollen glands and lost an eye from lack of food, a common affliction which happens to many homeless cats stemming from lack of nutrition.
Crystal rescued “Kai” off a south Maui Beach, where we rescued several from the same area and to this day still provide food to the ones remaining
Your kind donation will be used to Spay, Neuter, rescue and relocate to our sanctuary.
Recently, we rescued cats from gas stations yet still more are in need of our help. With your donation, you will be helping to contribute to saving lives!
Papa
“Papa” is one of our special needs senior Cats
He was living inside a drainpipe underground!
Crystal spent days to rescue him! He has an auto immune illness and requires extra care with a special expensive diet, including medications.
He is an indoor only rescue, a happy boy from starvation to lots of TLC from our Hearts family.

Zeni
Zeni was rescued from the Safeway market, she was just a tiny kitten crying underneath the handicap cart by the entrance.
On her very first day as a rescue Crystal took her into the Safeway store because it was too hot to leave her in the car while conducting other business that day, including the bank and the health food store.
Zeni brought many smiles to all the clerks as Crystal would show them Zeni in the little soft carry bag needed from limited interaction with others. Zeni provided a sense of fun and love as she was witnessed by those around her. She turns any day into a full one filled with fun and love.

Our locations are here to provide a safe, warm, and caring space for the cats. If you're able, please consider donating to help us shelter, care for, and prepare these felines for happy lives in loving homes or assist them with our care. Your consideration is much appreciated.
